When we talk about stories of migration and success, few shine as brightly as that of Dr. Raju Adhikari — a scientist, innovator, and community leader who transformed challenges into opportunities and built bridges between science, society, and culture.
Born in Nepal, Dr. Adhikari’s journey to Australia wasn’t just about professional growth — it was about creating impact that transcends borders. After working at Nepal’s Academy of Science and Technology, he moved to Australia in the early 1990s, driven by a desire to continue his research in a stable, innovative environment. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary.
Building a Legacy at CSIRO
At the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) — Australia’s premier scientific body — Dr. Adhikari became the first Nepalese scientist to join the institution. His work in biomedical polymers led to life-changing medical technologies, including coatings for pacemaker wires and burn treatment materials that have benefited millions globally.
His research didn’t stay confined to laboratories. It evolved into two successful startups, multiple patents, and a reputation that positioned him among Australia’s leading innovators in biomedical science.
Leadership Beyond the Lab
But Dr. Adhikari’s impact extends far beyond science. For over 30 years, he has been a tireless advocate for migrant empowerment and multicultural unity. As the founding president of the Nepalese Association of Victoria, he helped build one of the most active South Asian communities in Australia.
His vision of collective leadership later led to the creation of AMMON – the Australia Multicultural Organisation Network — a platform uniting migrant communities to work together, amplify their voices, and engage with government bodies on shared challenges such as employment, health, and inclusion.
Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
One of Dr. Adhikari’s most profound contributions has been his work on mental health awareness within multicultural communities. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed deep emotional vulnerabilities, inspiring him to author books and organize international conventions on emotional wellbeing.
Through his Emotional Wellbeing Institute, he promotes a preventative approach to mental health — encouraging people to manage emotions early, build resilience, and overcome cultural stigmas around seeking help.
Words of Wisdom for Migrants
In his message to new migrants, Dr. Adhikari emphasizes ambition, adaptability, and self-belief:
“Australia is the best country in the world — be patient, be open, and believe in yourself. You will reach your destination.”
He encourages migrants to aim high, seek mentorship, and volunteer, turning every opportunity into a step toward leadership.
