The carer must be willing and able to provide ongoing substantial care and support for the sponsoring relative.
The key requirement for this visa is that your relative’s medical condition must be assessed by Bupa Medical Visa Services before the Department can decide your visa application.
The medical assessment will determine
- A rating or score based on the Impairment Tables provided by the Department of Human Services
- The extend of their ability such as eating, dressing, hygiene, mobility, for at least the next two years.
- The type of assistance required to manage those needs.
The current minimum threshold rating is 30.
There are two visa options available
- Subclass 116 (Offshore – you are outside Australia during the Carer Visa Application process and must be outside Australia when this visa is granted)
- Subclass 836 (Onshore – you are inside Australia during the Carer Visa Application process and must be inside Australia when this visa is granted)
- Both of the subclasses are permanent visas.
Both subclasses of the Carer visa requires the applicant to have
- a sponsor (who needs the applicant’s care or their partner) – who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen and is settled in Australia
- Must be related to the sponsor (a partner, child, parent, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew or step-equivalent)
Both subclasses of the Carer visa requires the applicant to have
- Provide sufficient proof that their relative or member of their family unit has a long-term medical condition that requires their care
- Provide evidence that the care required cannot be provided by a nurse, hospital or welfare community in Australia
- Meet the character and health requirements
Further eligibility requirements may apply.
